Causes of Bad Breath

MILLIONS OF PEOPLE SUFFER FROM IT, BUT NOBODY TALKS ABOUT IT
In an age where almost any problem is openly discussed on TV talk shows and in the daily papers, there's still one subject about which few people talk -- Indeed, as the TV commercial put it, " Even your best friend won't tell you!" Over 35 million people suffer from it and over $1.5 billion is spent to get rid of it.

BAD BREATH
Not the bad breath you get from eating lots of garlic with pasta, or onions on your hamburger -- that's temporary and easily dealt with. We're talking about Chronic Bad Breath, the kind that brushing, flossing, and rinsing with a mouthwash can't cure. Although breath disorders have been a problem for mankind from the dawn of history, chronic disorders of the breath -- what Dentists often call "Halitosis" -- have previously been difficult to diagnose, treat and control.

Ninety percent (90%) of malodor problems occur in the oral cavity. The presence of bacterial flora in the oral cavity react with the dead cells and food debris producing Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSC) which consist of gases (mainly hydrogen sulfide, among others) that create a putrid smell or malodor.

In recent years developments have emerged to help diagnose and control malodor. With this technology I can now measure the degree and concentration of malodor producing gases in your mouth. One of the developments is the application of the Dark Phase Contrast Microscope in determining the bacterial flora which produce the malodorous gases in the oral cavity. This flora can be eliminated by professional treatment. There are other diagnostic methods that are incorporated in this office. 10% of the malodor is caused by medical conditions. These will be referred to the appropriate physician.
